TMC Labels ONOE as a Flagrant Assault on Democracy, SP Leader Brands it a 'Conspiracy'

New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) Amid tensions within the INDIA bloc, the opposition parties led by Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), and several others appear to have united in their criticism of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill.

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday characterized the ONOE as a ‘direct assault on the very foundation of our democracy’ and asserted that his party will vigorously oppose this anti-democratic agenda of the BJP-led NDA government.

SP has stated that the ONOE is not only undemocratic but also a conspiracy by the ruling party aimed at undermining the Constitution.

Both TMC and SP expressed their vehement opposition to the ONOE bill on X, just before its introduction in Parliament.

Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC General Secretary, criticized the Centre, stating, “The BJP’s blatant attempt to introduce a Constitutional Amendment bill today, while the debate on the Constitution bill is still ongoing in Parliament, is nothing short of an unashamed attack on democracy.”

“This is not merely a bill; it is a direct assault on the very foundation of our democracy, established through the sacrifices of our founding fathers,” he continued.

He further asserted that Bengal will not remain silent and that his party will fight tenaciously to safeguard the soul of India and dismantle this ‘anti-democratic’ agenda.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also expressed strong disapproval of the bill on X.

“This will diminish the significance of states as well as the Rajya Sabha. Tomorrow, the BJP might demand the dissolution of the Rajya Sabha too and propose a new slogan 'One Country-One Assembly' to solidify their dictatorship. However, the reality is that in our country, the state is considered fundamental, and there is a constitutional provision for the continuity of the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha is designated for a term of five years,” he wrote on X.

He added that if this bill becomes law, it will transition the nation from democracy to autocracy, rendering elections merely a facade.
