New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) On Monday, the Congress party submitted a notice to initiate a motion to suspend the Lok Sabha's proceedings in order to deliberate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being executed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Congress MP Manickam Tagore B. emphasized in the notice that this issue constitutes a matter of urgent significance.

He asserted that the situation has threatened democracy with an unprecedented crisis.

In his notice, he criticized the Election Commission for implementing the SIR in a one-sided, authoritarian manner that lacks planning. He pointed out that there has been no dialogue, no consultation with educators, no coordination with states, and a total disregard for the public's distress.

While addressing the Speaker, Tagore remarked that the SIR operation has devolved into a monocratic and high-pressure initiative, lacking a proper schedule, adequate manpower, and a compassionate approach.

He alleged that the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are overburdened, caught between classroom responsibilities and election tasks. Many have collapsed, some have died, and there are reports of suicides among them. Yet, the Election Commission has not conducted any investigations, released data, or acknowledged the BLO fatalities on a state or union territory basis.

Tagore accused the ECI of being insensitive and termed the situation as institutional cruelty, highlighting the absence of systems to monitor suicides, provide mental health support, or establish compensation mechanisms.

He stated, “The general public is also experiencing confusion, panic, repeated verifications, and a complete erosion of trust. The SIR initiative has become anti-people, anti-teacher, and anti-democratic.”

Tagore is calling for an immediate halt to the SIR exercise across all twelve states and union territories, demanding a comprehensive national inquiry into every reported BLO death and suicide, along with compensation for the affected families.

He further urged for urgent reforms in election processes to avert additional loss of life and safeguard the BLOs, calling for the Election Commission to clarify the autocratic and reckless implementation and its ramifications.

He concluded by stating, “This House cannot proceed with its business while BLOs are perishing and citizens are suffering under this undemocratic SIR framework.”

Point of View

It's crucial to acknowledge the serious implications of the Congress party's motion regarding the SIR. While the concerns raised about the welfare of BLOs and the integrity of the electoral process are valid, it is equally important to approach these discussions with balanced scrutiny, ensuring that democratic processes are upheld without compromising the responsibilities of the Election Commission.
