Has the Congress Called Out ECI's Preparation for SIR?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has raised concerns regarding the readiness of the Election Commission of India (ECI), asserting that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state has commenced without adequate preparation.
The Congress party has supported its claims against the ECI by stating that a majority of the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) assigned to carry out the SIR process have not yet arrived at the booths situated in the remote regions of Madhya Pradesh.
Former Minister Sajjan Singh Verma stated, "BLOs were expected to commence the distribution of electoral forms during their door-to-door outreach today (Tuesday), but that has not occurred. Reports indicate that in various locations, BLOs have been dispatched without the necessary electoral forms, indicating that the ECI was not fully equipped for the SIR."
Verma, who leads an eight-member Congress panel overseeing the SIR process in the state, informed IANS on Tuesday that the party is well-prepared for the SIR activities across every district and booth in Madhya Pradesh.
He remarked, "The manner in which this SIR exercise was initiated on Tuesday clearly demonstrates that the ECI lacked complete preparedness. The Congress has deployed teams in each district and at every booth to monitor the activities of the BLOs closely," according to the Congress leader's comments to IANS.
After training over 65,000 BLOs responsible for conducting door-to-door voter verification, the officers have begun visiting their designated booths.
Madhya Pradesh comprises a total of 230 Assembly seats and 29 Lok Sabha constituencies across 55 districts, which are categorized into six divisions: Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Chambal, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar, Shahdol, and Ujjain.
The voter registration list in Madhya Pradesh was frozen after the ECI announced the SIR in the state on October 27, meaning no new modifications can be made without verification from the BLO assigned by the ECI.
Madhya Pradesh's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Sanjeev Jha, has directed district collectors, commissioners, and other senior officials to closely oversee the SIR process to ensure no eligible voters are overlooked during verification.
CEO Jha clarified that BLOs will not request any documents from eligible voters; their role is to distribute forms and record information during their door-to-door visits.
Nonetheless, the CEO also stated that BLOs will only gather documents if there are discrepancies in the voter's record compared to the previous database.
In such instances, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) will issue a notice separately requesting documents.
