Bhopal, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a widely discussed initiative for the verification of electoral rolls being executed by the Election Commission of India (ECI), officially commenced in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

Following their training, over 65,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have started their door-to-door visits to verify voters at their assigned booths.

Madhya Pradesh boasts a total of 230 Assembly seats and 29 Lok Sabha constituencies across 55 districts, organized into six divisions: Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Chambal, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar, Shahdol, and Ujjain.

The voter list in Madhya Pradesh was already frozen after the ECI's announcement of the SIR on October 27, meaning no alterations can be made without verification from the appointed BLO.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Madhya Pradesh, Sanjeev Jha, has directed district collectors, commissioners, and other senior officials to closely oversee the SIR process, ensuring no eligible voter is overlooked.

Jha explained that the BLOs will not ask for any documentation from eligible voters; they are only required to distribute forms and record the information collected during their visits.

However, the CEO specified that BLOs may collect documents if discrepancies arise between the voter's records and the previous database. In such instances, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) will issue a separate notice to request documents.

Meanwhile, political parties, notably the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress, have mobilized their teams to monitor the exercise in Madhya Pradesh.

The state Congress has established an eight-member committee, led by former minister Sajjan Singh Verma and including members such as JP Dhanopia, Sanjay Kale, Rajeev Singh, and Shailendra Patel.

Conversely, the state BJP is set to conduct a training camp for party workers involved in the SIR process, with state BJP chief Hemant Khandelwal and Joint National Secretary scheduled to address the session at the party headquarters in Bhopal.

Notably, the ECI has announced the second phase of the SIR across 12 States and Union Territories. Besides Madhya Pradesh, the remaining regions include Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The initial phase of the SIR was conducted in Bihar, resulting in the removal of over 68 lakh names from the electoral rolls.
