Bhopal, Dec 22 (NationPress) Following a span of over one and a half months dedicated to the door-to-door Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative in Madhya Pradesh, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to unveil the preliminary electoral roll of voters for the state on Tuesday, as confirmed by election officials on Monday.

Sources from the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) in Madhya Pradesh informed IANS that initial evaluations indicate that approximately 41.8 lakh voters, representing around 7.2 percent of the electorate, may see their names expunged from the SIR.

Official data suggests that among the 41.8 lakh flagged names, 8.4 lakh voters are deceased, another 8.4 lakh are marked as absent, 22.5 lakh have relocated to different areas, and 2.5 lakh are listed at multiple addresses.

In Bhopal, which has 21.25 lakh registered voters, around 4.3 lakh names—making up 20.23 percent—are expected to be omitted from the draft electoral rolls.

In Indore, with 28.67 lakh voters, approximately 4.4 lakh names have been flagged; Gwalior may lose 2.5 lakh names from its 16.49 lakh electorate, while Jabalpur could see 2.4 lakh names removed from 19.25 lakh.

However, these figures are provisional, and the definitive count of voters removed will be revealed only after the final electoral draft is published by the ECI on Tuesday, according to an official.

The ECI has postponed the timeline for the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in five states: Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, along with the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which was originally set for December 11.

Over 65,000 BLOs (Booth Level Officers) have been assigned to conduct door-to-door verification of voters since November 4, during which more than 6.65 crore voters were registered in 2023 across Madhya Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh comprises 230 Assembly seats and 29 Lok Sabha constituencies across 55 districts, which are categorized into 10 divisions including Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Chambal, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar, Shahdol, and Ujjain.

More than 65,000 booth-level officers (BLOs) have traversed households throughout cities, towns, and villages to verify voter information since the SIR exercise commenced in the state.

Notably, throughout the SIR initiative, the principal opposition party, Congress, in Madhya Pradesh has persistently opposed the ECI's actions, casting political allegations against it.

On Monday, a delegation of state Congress representatives approached the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Bhopal, alleging discrepancies in the SIR process.

Point of View

I emphasize that the ongoing electoral reform processes are critical for ensuring a transparent and fair democratic process. The SIR initiative reflects the commitment to updating and maintaining accurate voter rolls, which is vital for the integrity of elections. While opposition voices raise concerns, it's essential to focus on the end goal of a representative electoral system.
