What Actions Will ECI Take Against BLOs for Data Errors?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI), represented by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, has issued a stern warning to booth-level officers (BLOs) involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. They face strict disciplinary measures if any “deliberate” mistakes are detected in the uploading of voter data.
An official notice has been dispatched from the CEO's office to all BLOs, which is available to IANS. This communication firmly instructs BLOs to uphold accuracy and integrity in all aspects of voter data entry.
Furthermore, the CEO's office emphasized that, as BLOs are currently on deputation to the ECI for the SIR exercise, the commission retains the authority to impose disciplinary sanctions for any deliberate or negligent errors.
“It is your responsibility to ensure that the names of deceased, absent, shifted, or duplicate voters are removed. The primary goal of this SIR is to guarantee that no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible voter is included in the electoral roll,” the communication articulated. The message was conveyed in Bengali.
Sources within the CEO's office revealed that this warning was prompted by multiple instances of “absurdities” and irregularities detected during the data-entry phase of the revision exercise.
“Instead of starting with disciplinary measures, the commission opted to allow BLOs a chance to correct their mistakes, which is why this cautionary notice has been issued at this time,” explained a senior official from the CEO’s office.
The three-phase Special Intensive Revision (SIR) commenced on November 4, with the first phase concluding on December 16, when the draft voters' list will be published.
Following the draft list’s release, the notification phase will begin. This includes issuance, hearing, verification, and decisions regarding enumeration forms, along with the handling of claims and objections. These activities will run concurrently by electoral registration officers (EROs) from December 16 to February 7, 2026.
The verification of various roll parameters and obtaining the ECI's endorsement for final publication is set for February 10, 2026.
The final electoral roll publication is now scheduled for February 14, revised from the prior date of February 7.
