Kolkata, Sep 22 (NationPress) With the potential commencement of the Election Commission of India (ECI)-suggested Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal next month, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office is implementing all necessary measures to ensure a secure and efficient revision process.
Recognizing the critical role of Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) as essential grassroots electoral officials, the CEO’s office is focusing on both the conduct and safety of these officers during their field duties related to the revision.
According to a source from the CEO’s office, BLOs have received explicit directions that if they encounter any interference, resistance, or intentional non-cooperation from any political party or members of the state administrative machinery while performing their duties, such incidents should be reported immediately to the CEO’s office.
Depending on the urgency and seriousness of the situation, the CEO will take the necessary actions and will also notify the ECI headquarters in New Delhi regarding any interference, resistance, or deliberate non-cooperation.
“Based on the recommendations made by the CEO’s office, the commission will suggest strict disciplinary measures against any individual, whether political or administrative, found guilty of hindering the BLOs in their duties,” remarked the insider.
Additionally, senior officials from the CEO’s office will conduct a thorough review of the security arrangements provided to the BLOs during their field inspections related to the SIR.
“Should any negligence be observed regarding the security cover for the BLOs, the CEO’s office will escalate the issue to the ECI, which will then take suitable actions,” the source added.
“The commission has already issued rigorous instructions to all CEO offices to prioritize the safety of the BLOs during their field assignments,” noted the insider.
Moreover, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has raised concerns about the safety of the BLOs, especially in light of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s repeated reminders that the BLOs are, fundamentally, employees of the state government.
