Ahmedabad, April 7 (NationPress) Congress is reaffirming its ideological foundation with a two-day national convention scheduled for April 8 and 9 in Gujarat.
Reiterating its dedication to the principles of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and the first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the party has framed the event as a strategic initiative to counter what it terms the Modi government’s “bulldozer politics” and the “subversion” of the Constitution.
Speaking to the media at the Ahmedabad airport, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal outlined the party's agenda, asserting: “The Congress party is reclaiming the Gandhian path. We are committed to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. The Modi government is bulldozing democratic norms with impunity, and we are prepared to resist.”
This national convention occurs at a pivotal political moment, as Congress aims to consolidate opposition momentum and rejuvenate its organizational strength.
Venugopal mentioned that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on April 8 will outline a plan to counter what he labeled as the Centre’s unrelenting assault on democratic institutions.
“There is no freedom, no space for expression. We’re not even allowed to speak in Parliament,” he stated, adding that parliamentary traditions have been compromised under the BJP-led administration.
Congress leader Pawan Khera also highlighted Gujarat’s significant role in shaping India’s future.
“From Mahatma Gandhi to Sardar Patel, Gujarat has consistently guided the nation during challenging times. Today, as the country confronts a democratic crisis, Congress draws strength from this legacy,” he remarked.
Khera expressed optimism that the resolutions from the Ahmedabad convention would substantially influence national politics.
Discussing internal reforms, Congress General Secretary Sachin Pilot pointed out that the party is experiencing a generational transition, with younger leaders assuming important positions.
“The convention comes at a critical juncture. We are prioritizing accountability, ideological clarity, and fortifying the party in Gujarat — a state that once represented the Congress’s ideological stronghold,” Pilot stated.
The party also unveiled its official calendar ahead of the event, initiating a symbolic and strategic political mobilization from the land of Gandhi.
The event has attracted key Congress leaders to Ahmedabad, with over 90 percent of CWC members, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Shashi Tharoor, Ashok Gehlot, and Venugopal himself, anticipated to participate.
The Congress leadership, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, will arrive on April 8, completing a robust leadership lineup.
