Gujarat Congress Leaders Set to Confer with High Command in Delhi Amid Party Overhaul

Ahmedabad, March 27 (NationPress) The Gujarat Congress is gearing up for a significant overhaul as district and city presidents are set to head to New Delhi on April 3 for vital discussions with the party's high command.

The upcoming visit follows Rahul Gandhi's recent tour in Gujarat, where he indicated a potential shake-up within the state unit to bolster the party’s chances ahead of pivotal elections.

A total of 33 district and eight city presidents will take part in the strategic meeting at Gandhi Bhavan in Delhi.

The primary focus of these discussions will be on rejuvenating the party's grassroots network in preparation for next year’s local body elections and decentralizing authority within the state unit, a demand increasingly supported by party workers.

This initiative forms part of a broader Congress revamp campaign, which involves 700 district presidents across the country through a three-phase engagement.

The leadership from Gujarat will collaborate with senior Congress officials to finalize strategies aimed at enhancing the party’s performance in the state, where it has faced challenges against the BJP’s dominance for over two decades.

Rahul Gandhi’s address on March 8 in Ahmedabad served as a pivotal moment for Gujarat Congress leaders. During a meeting with workers, he accused certain party members of covertly supporting the BJP.

"There are two categories of individuals in Congress - those genuinely committed to the party's ideology and those who, while being part of Congress, act in the interest of the BJP," stated Rahul Gandhi, highlighting that such internal sabotage has significantly contributed to the party's electoral failures.

He further stressed the importance of removing leaders functioning as the BJP’s ‘B team’ to revitalize Congress in Gujarat.

Rahul Gandhi hinted at a potential purge within the state unit, suggesting that 20 to 40 leaders may need to be expelled to restore Congress's ideological integrity.

He also acknowledged that Congress has struggled to effectively connect with the public in Gujarat, linking this to a divided leadership.

"One segment of our leadership is in touch with the people of Gujarat, while another remains disconnected and compromised," he remarked.

He emphasized that achieving electoral success should not come at the expense of the party's values.

"What truly matters is ensuring that Congress is led by those who uphold its core principles," he asserted.

In a bid to strengthen its presence in Gujarat, the Congress high command has organized a national convention in Ahmedabad scheduled for April 8-9. This event will bring together senior leaders, national strategists, and regional representatives to outline a roadmap for Congress’s revival in the state.

During the convention, discussions will center on developing a mass outreach strategy to counter the BJP’s influence, empowering local leadership for autonomous decision-making, fortifying booth-level committees to enhance electoral performance, and addressing factionalism within the Gujarat Congress.

Despite facing electoral challenges for decades, the Congress party maintains a loyal voter base in rural Gujarat, particularly among farmers, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority communities.

However, ongoing internal disputes, a lack of strong leadership, and a weak cadre system have enabled the BJP to maintain significant control over the state’s political landscape.

Political analysts believe that the forthcoming meeting in Delhi and the national convention in Ahmedabad will play a crucial role in shaping Congress’s future in Gujarat.

With local body elections looming in 2026 and the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections on the horizon, the Congress party’s capability to implement these changes swiftly will be vital in determining whether it can mount a serious challenge to the BJP or remain a marginal player in the state’s political arena.
