Kolkata, Jan 1 (NationPress) In a perplexing case concerning the death of a woman Home Guard in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, authorities have apprehended the police officer implicated in her demise, as confirmed by the police on Thursday.
Sub-Inspector Sayan Bhattacharya of the Canning Police Station was taken into custody in the Swarupnagar police station area of Basirhat, located in North 24 Parganas district earlier today.
After his arrest, the accused was presented before the Alipore court.
The police have expressed the need for his custody for a duration of seven days to facilitate further investigations.
Investigators believe that interrogating the Sub-Inspector is crucial to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman Home Guard.
It is anticipated that more revelations may arise from the questioning of the suspect.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to examine the circumstances of the woman Home Guard's death in Canning, and the police officer involved has been suspended from his duties.
The charge under murder-related statutes has taken Sayan Bhattacharya by surprise, following accusations from the deceased woman’s family that he was involved in the death of Reshmi Molla, whose body was discovered in police residential quarters in Canning on December 27.
Post-incident, the accused Sub-Inspector had vanished.
The family of the deceased Home Guard contends that Reshmi had an extramarital relationship with the accused Sub-Inspector, and that she was murdered after the affair was exposed.
In light of this, the Baruipur district police initiated a murder inquiry.
Reshmi's body was found in a police residential quarter on Saturday.
The corpse of 22-year-old Guljan Parveen Molla, known as Reshmi, was discovered hanging from the ceiling within a room of the police quarters.
She hailed from the Uttar Moukhali area under the Jibantala Police Station in Canning Block II.
Notably, Reshmi's father, Rashid Molla, was murdered in the Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district during the Panchayat elections almost two years ago.
After her father's assassination, Reshmi, being the eldest daughter, was granted employment as a woman Home Guard.
