Kochi, Aug 6 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court on Wednesday expressed its strong disapproval towards Additional Director General of Police (Armed Forces Battalions) M.R. Ajith Kumar for breaching court orders by utilizing a police tractor on the Sabarimala trekking route on July 12 and 13. This came as the court formally concluded the suo motu case.
After reviewing the explanation provided, the court stated: "We strongly condemn the actions taken by such a senior officer of the Police Department," as it wrapped up the case.
Previously, the court had requested an explanation from the chief police coordinator (the ADGP, Police Headquarters), Sabarimala, regarding this incident.
In his defense, it was reported that ADGP Ajith Kumar acknowledged using the tractor for transportation between Pamba and Sannidhanam, citing health issues that hindered his ability to trek.
Recognizing that a formal explanation had been requested by the Director General of Police (DGP) and a criminal case had been initiated, the court opted to conclude the proceedings by directing the Chief Coordinator and the Travancore Devaswom Board to guarantee that such violations do not occur again.
Interestingly, during the prior hearing, the court had reprimanded the official, leading to Ajith Kumar's transfer from his role as ADGP, Armed Forces Battalion, to that of the Excise Commissioner.
The controversy surrounding the senior police officer escalated last month after footage emerged of him traveling on a police tractor from Pampa to near the Sabarimala temple.
This specific route is exclusively designated for goods transport and is forbidden for pilgrims and officials by the high court. In a ruling from 2021, the high court had prohibited the transportation of passengers via tractors along the Swami Ayyappan Road, and Ajith Kumar’s actions were deemed a breach of this order.
As the situation intensified, the high court, in a suo motu case, voiced its dissatisfaction and scrutinized the actions taken by authorities, particularly regarding the transportation of both pilgrims and officials in tractors.
Ajith Kumar’s name had appeared in a list of six police officials submitted by the CM Vijayan government to the UPSC for consideration for the post of state police chief, but he ultimately did not make it into the top three and was therefore eliminated.
