Chennai, Dec 6 (NationPress) The state secretary of CPI-M, P. Shanmugam, called on the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday to establish a dedicated housing initiative that ensures sufficient living space for all families relocated in Chennai, especially those moved to Kannagi Nagar.
He stated that numerous families are still residing in cramped, inadequately designed accommodations that do not adhere to the standards of respectable living, urging for prompt corrective actions.
After paying tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his death anniversary, Shanmugam lamented that the constitutional values championed by Ambedkar are currently facing significant challenges.
“The principles of secularism, democracy, and socialism are being systematically eroded by the BJP-led central government. It is essential for all secular entities to come together to safeguard these values,” he emphasized.
Addressing state issues, Shanmugam pointed out the stagnant monthly food allowance given to students in government hostels.
Despite escalating food prices, the allowance remains unchanged at Rs 1,500, which increasingly strains students' ability to cover basic costs.
He urged the government to promptly revise the allowance for both school and college students.
Shanmugam also highlighted the plight of Scheduled Caste families throughout Tamil Nadu, many of whom still lack essential services such as appropriate roads, sanitation, and drinking water.
He claimed that funds designated for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under various welfare initiatives are frequently underutilized and left unspent by the end of the fiscal year.
“Authorities need to strategize schemes early and execute them consistently throughout the year to ensure full allocation reaches the intended recipients,” he asserted.
Expressing grave concern over the ongoing challenges faced by families relocated from central Chennai to Kannagi Nagar, he remarked that overcrowded housing units with restricted living space rob people of their dignity and comfort.
He called on the government to re-evaluate and revamp the resettlement framework to ensure adequate space, improved infrastructure, and enhanced living conditions.
Reaffirming CPI-M's dedication to social justice, Shanmugam insisted that the government must prioritize inclusive development, ensuring that welfare programs effectively benefit the state's most marginalized communities.
