Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 9 (NationPress) A new controversy has emerged within the CPI(M) following allegations that state secretary M.V. Govindan visited renowned astrologer Madhava Pothuval in Payyannur.
The incident gained traction on social media when a photograph of the meeting went viral and also became a focal point at the recent state committee gathering.
During the meeting, P. Jayarajan reportedly expressed concern that certain party leaders are frequently visiting astrologers, labeling it a clear breach of the CPI(M)’s fundamental Marxist principles.
Both Jayarajan and Govindan, who hail from Kannur, were once considered close allies, but their relationship appears to have deteriorated.
On Saturday, Jayarajan claimed ignorance about the situation and stated, “I believe all of you are aware of what Govindan has said regarding this matter.”
Referring to previous controversies, some party members noted that the criticism directed at Govindan resembles earlier attempts to marginalize the late former state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan over a temple ritual issue.
As local body elections draw near, party leadership is expected to step in to resolve the dispute before it impacts the organization’s public image.
Govindan, however, has dismissed the allegations as groundless, asserting, “No criticisms have been made against me. These assertions are unfounded. The media is responsible for creating controversies and then seeking my response.”
For the CPI(M), this astrologer controversy presents another challenge regarding internal discipline and ideological integrity, with the party now tasked with managing both public perception and internal discord.
Meanwhile, veteran party leader A.K. Balan downplayed the situation, stating, “We engage with a variety of individuals, including astrologers and others. Just because some CPI(M) leaders meet an astrologer does not imply that we are followers of such individuals.”
