Kolkata, June 26 (NationPress) The CPI(M) has officially reinstated senior leader and former party legislator Tanmoy Bhattacharya, who faced allegations of misconduct towards a female journalist from a vernacular audio-visual news outlet.
"During the interim period, he has been suspended twice due to the same allegations, and this marks the second time his suspension has been lifted. Moving forward, he will function from the CPI(M)'s state headquarters located in Kolkata. The decision to restore his status was made following a two-day state committee meeting that concluded on Wednesday night," a member of the party's state committee confirmed on Thursday morning.
On October 27 of the previous year, the female journalist shared a video on her social media account, accusing Bhattacharya of inappropriate conduct during her visit to his residence for an interview.
She specifically accused him of sitting on her lap during this interview.
The CPI(M) leadership promptly initiated Bhattacharya's suspension until the internal complaints committee could complete a thorough investigation into the allegations.
After the investigation, his suspension was initially lifted, albeit for just a few days.
However, within a week, the party opted to suspend him once more, this time for a duration of six months.
It was reported that while the internal complaints committee found no substantial evidence regarding the journalist's complaint, there had been prior allegations of similar inappropriate behavior against him.
Now, with the six-month suspension period concluded, he has been reinstated and is permitted to resume his role within the party.
According to party insiders, given his commitment to the party during challenging times, the leadership decided to grant him another chance.
"Additionally, he refrained from making any negative remarks about the party leadership during his suspension and did not target any senior leaders, avoiding any conspiracy theories. This also played a role in the decision to lift his suspension," stated the state committee member.
