Crane collapses on two houses in Mumbai's Kurla, eight injured during eviction op
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A crane collapsed onto two residential structures in Indira Nagar, Kurla (East), Mumbai in the early hours of Friday, 21 August, injuring at least eight people during what authorities described as a pre-eviction positioning exercise. The incident has raised sharp questions about safety protocols followed during demolition operations in the city.
How the Accident Unfolded
The collapse was reported at approximately 3:04 a.m. near Buntara Bhavan, close to an MHADA building behind Galaxy Apartment in Indira Nagar. According to local residents, demolition work was in progress on an old structure in Qureshi Nagar. A Poclain machine was reportedly being hoisted to the top of the building using the crane when the equipment lost balance and toppled with a loud noise.
A heavy section of the crane landed on two adjacent houses, triggering panic among residents. A car and an auto-rickshaw parked on the roadside were also reportedly damaged. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed the crane fell onto a slum area.
Rescue Operations and Condition of the Injured
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, 108 ambulance service, and BMC ward staff were immediately deployed for rescue and relief. Of the eight injured, six were admitted to Sion Hospital, where the BMC confirmed all were in stable condition. The remaining two were taken to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla and were also reported stable.
The identities of the injured had not been confirmed at the time of reporting, and authorities were working to determine whether anyone remained trapped at the site.
Train Services Disrupted
A portion of the collapsed crane reportedly came into contact with an overhead electric wire (OHE), affecting train movement in the area and adding to concerns among residents and commuters.
What Eyewitnesses Said
Sadiq Qureshi, whose sister and brother-in-law were among the injured, said: 'A crane fell at the house of my sister and brother-in-law, which is located within the MMRDA area. The crane fell toward the rear side of their house, and the adjacent house was also damaged. My sister and brother-in-law are in critical condition and have been admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla West. When I saw my brother-in-law, he had suffered serious injuries, particularly around his eyes, and was in very bad condition.'
Another local resident, Shafiq Qureshi, alleged a pattern of negligence: 'They did not take any care about safety precautions. Such incidents have happened before as well. A month ago, a wall collapsed, and one person died. That incident happened where this netting was installed. There is no safety arrangement for this, and the contractors do not listen to us.'
Investigation Under Way
According to the Junior Engineer of L Ward present at the site, MHADA had been preparing to commence an eviction and demolition operation at the location. Investigators are examining whether the crane lost balance due to a technical fault, overloading, or negligence. Police and concerned authorities are also assessing whether prescribed safety standards were adhered to during the operation. The incident is the latest in a series of construction-related accidents in Mumbai that have prompted calls for stricter enforcement of site safety norms.
