Five workers were killed and 12 others injured after a heavy crane collapsed during a violent thunderstorm at a cement bricks manufacturing unit on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Monday evening, April 27, 2025. The tragedy struck at a facility in Mahalingapuram, Shankarpally mandal, Rangareddy district, when powerful winds destabilised a crane that was actively lifting a load of cement bricks, sending it crashing down on workers below.

What Happened at the Site

According to officials, 17 workers were present at the cement brick company at the time of the accident. The crane, engaged in routine lifting operations, reportedly lost balance when a sudden thunderstorm swept through the area, generating heavy winds strong enough to topple the heavy equipment. Several workers were caught under the collapsing structure, resulting in five fatalities and multiple injuries on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Ali Hussain (35), Nagender (30), Sajid (32), Mithun, and Sonu. Their bodies were shifted to the Government Hospital at Chevella for postmortem examination. The 12 injured workers were admitted to a hospital in Shankarpally, with the condition of two of them stated to be critical.

Police Response and Investigation

Senior police officials rushed to the scene and launched rescue and relief operations immediately after the incident was reported. A police officer confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. Authorities are examining whether safety protocols were in place and whether adequate weather precautions were observed before the crane was deployed.

This incident raises serious questions about worksite safety standards at unorganised manufacturing units on the city's periphery, where compliance with occupational safety norms is often inconsistent. Notably, crane and heavy equipment accidents during adverse weather are not uncommon in India's rapidly expanding construction and manufacturing sectors.

Two More Incidents Rock Hyderabad the Same Evening

The crane tragedy was not the only crisis to unfold in Hyderabad on April 27. A massive fire broke out at a Mahindra automobile service centre in Amberpet, sending thick plumes of smoke into surrounding residential neighbourhoods and triggering widespread panic. Fire-fighting teams battled the blaze for several hours without being able to fully contain it, though no casualties were reported.

In a separate incident in the Gachibowli area, a JCB operator identified as Zakir died after debris from a demolition site struck him. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his death.

Impact on Workers and Safety Concerns

The cluster of incidents within a single evening underscores the acute risks faced by daily-wage and contract workers in Hyderabad's construction and manufacturing sectors. Labour rights advocates have long argued that informal worksites frequently bypass mandatory safety audits, leaving workers dangerously exposed to equipment failures and environmental hazards.

This is not the first time extreme weather has contributed to a fatal worksite accident in Telangana. The state has seen a pattern of weather-related industrial mishaps, particularly during the pre-monsoon thunderstorm season, which typically intensifies between March and May. Authorities are yet to confirm whether the crane operator or the company had received any weather alerts prior to commencing operations on Monday.

As investigations proceed, families of the deceased await answers — and compensation — from both the company and the state government. The broader question of enforcing worksite safety at informal industrial units on Hyderabad's outskirts remains urgently unresolved.
