New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) Cuba has shown a keen interest in increasing collaboration with India in Ayurveda and naturopathy, as stated by the Ministry of Science and Technology on Monday during a meeting commemorating the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The discussions focused on opportunities to strengthen cooperation in medical research, vaccine development, and sustainable biomanufacturing.
"India and Cuba reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral cooperation in science and technology, especially in the fields of biotechnology and biomanufacturing," the Ministry noted.
Both parties deliberated on reinforcing existing pacts in health, medicine, and biotechnology, building on earlier agreements related to traditional medicine, homeopathy, and scientific collaboration.
“With Cuba's increasing interest in Ayurveda and Indian naturopathy, both nations are optimistic about broadening cooperation in this field,” the Ministry added.
Importantly, Cuba inaugurated its first Ayurveda Center for holistic and preventive healthcare in November 2019 in Havana.
This center was established with assistance from the Ministry of Ayush.
“Collaborative research is crucial for a scientifically advanced society to exert a global impact,” stated the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
He emphasized that collaborating with leading global entities and engaging in complementary, targeted research will elevate India’s scientific community to new heights of innovation, transformation, and skill enhancement.
The Minister also highlighted the accomplishments of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in prioritizing collaborative research to address socio-economic and environmental challenges with long-lasting benefits, serving as the nodal agency for the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB).
"DBT has been pivotal in shaping the bioeconomy framework within the GIB, contributing to policy initiatives such as Lifestyles for Sustainable Development (LiFE), the BioE3 Policy, and the National Biofuels Policy," Singh remarked.
“These initiatives resonate with India’s vision of Green Growth and a Net-Zero carbon economy, highlighting India’s commitment to sustainable development,” he added.
Meanwhile, Cuba's Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Eduardo Martinez Diaz shared insights regarding Cuba’s achievements in biotechnology, particularly in creating low-cost vaccines and revolutionary cancer treatments.
Diaz underscored Cuba’s emphasis on biomanufacturing and expressed a desire to collaborate with India to enhance research and production capabilities.
He also extended an invitation to Singh to visit Havana and lead an Indian delegation to Bio-Habana 2026, a global biotechnology conference.
