Lodhi (Punjab), July 16 (NationPress) Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has urged the community to commit to reducing groundwater depletion and tackling environmental pollution.

During a gathering to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the holy Kali Bein's restoration, the Chief Minister pointed out that although Punjab is celebrated as the land of rivers, it is currently grappling with a significant water crisis, making water conservation essential. He noted that since he took office, his administration has revitalized 15,947 water channels across the state, facilitating water access to even the most remote villages.

Mann indicated that when he assumed leadership, only 21 percent of canal water was being used for irrigation in Punjab. However, he proudly announced that this figure has now risen to 63 percent. He called upon the citizens to join the government in transforming the initiative for water and environmental conservation into a widespread movement. Mann highlighted the importance of active public involvement and complete cooperation in this noble cause.

The Chief Minister stated that the initiative to clean the 165-km Kali Bein is a historic achievement. “This remarkable effort conveys a strong message globally about the significance of safeguarding air and water.” Mann praised Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal for initiating the Kar Sewa on July 16, 2000, at Gurdwara Shri Ber Sahib with a prayer.

Mann expressed pride in the fact that in 2022, Sant Seechewal was appointed as a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab and continues to be a voice for the people. He stated that Sant Seechewal has been a tireless advocate in Parliament for the preservation of water bodies. Mann mentioned that the ongoing efforts of the government and Sant Seechewal are now directed towards the cleaning of the Buddha Dariya, formerly known as Buddha Nallah, with hopes of restoring it to its original condition.

The Chief Minister added that the government is actively working to safeguard the state’s water resources. He noted that development projects worth crores of rupees are in progress to ensure the overall development of Sultanpur Lodhi, the holy city associated with Guru Nanak Dev. He assured that these projects would be completed soon.

Mann emphasized that commemorating the anniversary of the Kali Bein’s restoration is not just a ceremonial event, but rather aims to enhance public awareness about environmental conservation to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.
