New Delhi, July 22 (NationPress) Cybercrime incidents in India have escalated dramatically, witnessing an increase of more than 140% in the last five years. Reports from the Ministry of Home Affairs indicate that the number of cases more than doubled from 2018 to 2022.
According to the most recent data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 27,248 cybercrime cases recorded in 2018, which surged to 65,893 in 2022, as stated by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, during a Lok Sabha inquiry.
These crimes encompass a range of offenses executed through communication technology such as mobile phones, computers, and internet networks.
Nonetheless, the NCRB noted that they do not specifically track complaints from elderly individuals.
The Ministry of Home Affairs highlighted that the responsibility for ‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ rests with State Governments as stipulated by the Constitution.
Thus, the onus of preventing and investigating cybercrimes primarily lies with the States and Union Territories.
The Central Government, however, bolsters these efforts through advisories and funding aimed at enhancing local law enforcement agencies' capabilities.
To fortify India's stance against cybercrime, the Central Government has implemented various initiatives.
These include the establishment of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the launch of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in), and the introduction of the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) in 2021.
The government reports that through timely action, over Rs 5,489 crore has been saved from more than 17.82 lakh financial fraud complaints registered under the CFCFRMS.
To further assist citizens, a 24x7 helpline at ‘1930’ is now operational.
Additionally, the government has blocked over 9.42 lakh SIM cards and more than 2.6 lakh mobile IMEIs associated with cybercrimes.
Awareness campaigns have played a crucial role in the government's strategy, as explained by the Minister of State.
From caller tunes in various languages alerting against digital scams to advertisements in Metros, newspapers, and cinema halls, multiple channels have been utilized to inform the public. “The Prime Minister even addressed the risks of ‘digital arrests’ in his 'Mann Ki Baat' on October 27, 2024,” stated MoS Kumar.
The Government has also engaged social media influencers, Prasar Bharati, and events like Raahgiri and IPL to disseminate awareness.
These campaigns have reached schools, railway stations, and even religious gatherings like Kumbh Mela 2025.
