Bengaluru, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Indian government has assigned Z category security to Tibetan spiritual figure Dalai Lama, who is presently in Karnataka, based on a threat assessment from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), sources reported on Thursday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has provided VIP security for the Dalai Lama.

He will receive all-India Z-category security.

According to sources, the safety and protection of the 89-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader will be managed by the VIP Division of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

A team of thirty CRPF commandos will be in charge and operate in three shifts. Previously, the Dalai Lama's security provisions were managed by Himachal Pradesh.

According to the official itinerary, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to participate in a Long Life offering ceremony at the Gyudmey Assembly Hall in Hunsur town, Karnataka, on February 14. He had arrived at the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Bylakuppe on January 5.

The decision to enhance the Dalai Lama's security came after the arrest of two individuals who were allegedly monitoring his movements under the instructions of a Chinese national, Charlie Peng, as indicated by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on January 20, 2018.

Charlie Peng had previously been charged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly orchestrating a money-laundering scheme. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had detained him.

In January 2018, security personnel uncovered two powerful live bombs equipped with suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near the world-heritage Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya, where the Dalai Lama was conducting religious sessions. However, the investigation later confirmed that the Dalai Lama was not the intended target.

The investigation suggested the involvement of terrorist groups, which were allegedly linked to the 2013 Bodh Gaya blasts.

Turning 90 in July, the Dalai Lama is set to publish a new book in March that will provide insights into his years-long interactions with China.
