Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) In a bid to uphold the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s mission to motivate voters to participate actively in the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal, the District Magistrate's office, also serving as the District Electoral Officer (DEO) of Darjeeling district, organized a distinctive event dubbed the “Voters’ Pledge” in the picturesque hills on Friday.
The ECI shared images of this initiative on its official social media channels, captioned - “Darjeeling Awakens to a Call for Democracy”.
On a foggy morning set amidst the hills, a lively assembly of both youth and older citizens congregated at Chowrasta in Darjeeling, embodying the true essence of voter engagement.
“The Voter’s Pledge was recited, followed by an invigorating walkathon, spearheaded by senior citizens and enthusiastically joined by the younger generation,” the ECI’s announcement noted.
Colorful mascots of popular cartoon figures like “Chota Bheem” and “Chutki” added vibrancy to the event, interacting with attendees and promoting awareness.
“The message of conducting peaceful and festive elections resonated throughout the hills of Darjeeling. It’s your duty and responsibility. Let’s Vote!” the ECI’s announcement stated.
An insider from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal indicated that throughout this electoral process, the Commission has been dedicated to encouraging widespread voting enthusiasm.
“Our primary goal is to guarantee completely free, fair, and violence-free elections. Therefore, we have prioritized comprehensive security measures well ahead of time to alleviate any fears of intimidation among voters. Concurrently, the Commission has arranged various unique and interactive programs with the general public to highlight the significance of their vote in a democratic society. The Darjeeling event was part of this initiative,” the CEO’s office source revealed.
He further mentioned that another key focus for the Commission this time is to ensure that no fraudulent voter remains on the electoral roll while also guaranteeing that no legitimate voter is removed, achieved through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
