Will the Charge-Framing Against Minister Chandranath Sinha Be Delayed?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The initiation of the charge-framing process for Chandranath Sinha, the West Bengal minister implicated in a significant cash-for-school job scandal, faces an indefinite postponement.
The delay arises as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has yet to provide essential documents to the defence counsel, which are crucial for the ongoing proceedings against the minister overseeing the micro, small, and medium enterprises and textiles department.
Insiders revealed that the charge-framing was scheduled to occur at the special court designated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata on Monday.
However, the minister’s legal team notified the court of the ED’s failure to deliver the requested documents. Consequently, the defence counsel requested that the charge-framing procedure be postponed until the ED submits these documents, allowing adequate time for argument preparation.
Based on the defence counsel's request, the judge instructed the ED to present the necessary documents by March 13, after which the charge-framing process will commence.
The investigation into Sinha was triggered when his name surfaced in the primary teacher recruitment scam, leading the ED to conduct a search at his residence in Bolpur in March 2024. The agency seized Rs 41 lakh in cash and filed a charge sheet against him related to the primary teacher recruitment scam.
On September 6 of the previous year, Sinha surrendered to the special ED court and received bail.
Moreover, in January of this year, the ED reported the confiscation of assets valued at Rs 3.60 crore belonging to Sinha. The agency has seized a total of 10 properties owned by him, his wife, and his son, with a combined market value of approximately Rs 3.60 crore.
The ED’s charge sheet alleges that the minister endorsed the hiring of 159 ineligible candidates for primary teacher positions, reportedly collecting an average of Rs 8,00,000 from each candidate.
To recall, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose approved the ED’s charge sheet against Sinha in August last year.
ED officials first identified the minister in a diary belonging to a middleman, which led to the suspension and arrest of Kuntal Ghosh, a leader from the Trinamool Congress.
