New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) A Delhi court is set to hear a criminal defamation case on Thursday, initiated by Lipika Mitra, spouse of former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
This complaint arises from purportedly defamatory, false, and malicious comments made by Sitharaman concerning Mitra and Bharti's marriage during a press conference conducted on May 17 of the previous year.
Mitra alleges that these statements were extensively broadcast by national television channels, aimed at tarnishing her husband's reputation and electoral chances.
Bharti was a candidate for the INDIA bloc from the New Delhi parliamentary seat during the recent general elections.
Previously, the case was presented before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal, who permitted Sitharaman's legal team additional time to submit a 'vakalatnama (affidavit)' and to examine the details of the complaint.
The court directed Mitra’s legal representatives to furnish a digital copy of the complaint and a video link to the press conference that allegedly contained the defamatory remarks.
Mitra’s petition states, "The accused made these utterances with the sole intention of weakening his chances of winning and for causing immense mental anguish to him."
She contended that Sitharaman's comments not only harmed Bharti's political aspirations but also caused "irreparable mental agony" to her and their two minor children — a son and a daughter.
Furthermore, Mitra pointed out that Bharti, an IIT Delhi alumnus with a significant global network, has experienced reputational harm that extends far beyond India.
The complaint asserts, "The defamatory acts of the accused continue to cause enduring damage unless they are retracted or an apology is issued."
Mitra has requested the court to acknowledge the alleged offences and summon the Union Minister for trial.
Additionally, she seeks an injunction to prevent Sitharaman from "publishing, circulating or distributing similar defamatory content" on any platform and demands that measures be taken to eliminate the content from all media outlets.
