Did Delhi Speaker Vijender Gupta Accuse Atishi of Misinformation Regarding AAP MLAs' Suspension?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) - Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday leveled accusations against AAP leader and Leader of Opposition Atishi for disseminating misleading information regarding the suspension of four party legislators from the Assembly proceedings.
The four suspended legislators - Sanjeev Jha, Som Dutt, Kuldeep Kumar, and Jarnail Singh - were removed from the House for intentionally disrupting proceedings, as stated by the Speaker in an official statement.
Gupta pointed out that Atishi had made statements to the media indicating that “Today, the members were expelled from the Legislative Assembly merely for wearing masks.”
“This claim is factually incorrect and misrepresents the actual proceedings of the House,” he remarked.
The Speaker emphasized that the action taken by the Chair was unrelated to the wearing of masks, asserting that at no time were Members expelled solely for this reason. Any suggestion to the contrary is a misrepresentation of facts, he declared in the statement.
According to the Speaker, his decision was made strictly to uphold the authority, order, and dignity of the House, in complete alignment with the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
“Due to conduct that constitutes contempt of the House, the issue has been referred to the Committee of Privileges under Rule 82, which allows the Speaker to refer any question of privilege or contempt for examination, investigation, or report,” the statement read.
Furthermore, it is significant to note that under Rule 221, the Committee of Privileges has the authority to “investigate the matter based on evidence and circumstances to determine if any breach of privileges or contempt has occurred, and to make appropriate recommendations.”
Additionally, it should be noted that Atishi attempted to initiate a discussion on the topic of “Pollution in Delhi” before it was scheduled for discussion on January 7, despite Speaker Gupta having already indicated that the topic would be addressed at the designated time.
“Her effort to raise the issue ahead of the scheduled business, despite this clear understanding, was viewed as a deliberate and calculated attempt to disrupt the orderly conduct of the House,” the statement concluded.
