Why Did Speaker Suspend 4 ‘Unruly’ AAP MLAs for the Session?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijender Gupta, took decisive action on Friday by suspending four members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the duration of the ongoing session. This suspension was a result of their alleged persistent attempts to interrupt the proceedings of the Winter Session.
According to a statement released by the Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker indicated that due to the "constant disruption of House proceedings and a breach of decorum, the Opposition Members Som Dutt, Jarnail Singh, Sanjeev Jha, and Kuldeep Kumar would be suspended for the remainder of the session."
Speaker Gupta's decision was executed to uphold the authority, order, and respect of the House, in line with the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, as noted in the statement.
Previously, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta introduced the initial batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for the Financial Year 2025-26 and also presented the Delhi Appropriation (No. 1) Bill 2026.
Water Minister Parvesh Singh addressed the House regarding drinking water supply issues, asserting that the previous AAP government’s inadequate maintenance and project delays had left the 16,000-km-long water supply network in disrepair.
“Of this network, a substantial 5,200-km pipeline has been in use for over 30 years, and more than 2,000 km of pipelines are between 20 to 30 years old. We are experiencing a loss of over 45% of the total water supplied, coupled with a risk of contamination,” he emphasized.
He further noted that the cancellation of 2011 tenders associated with the Chandrawal and Wazirabad command area projects, along with objections from funding agencies, has significantly delayed essential development initiatives.
The pollution of the Yamuna River was also attributed to the discharge of waste from colonies lacking sewer systems, and the delay in cleaning trunk sewers has compounded existing legacy issues for the current administration.
Singh highlighted that the Rekha Gupta government has approved 94 projects exceeding Rs 1 crore each during its 11-month term, with total project approvals surpassing Rs 7,212 crore.
He added that the government has reinstated the Rs 2,406 crore Chandrawal command area project, which will involve the installation of a new 1,044-km-long water supply pipeline and the construction of 21 underground reservoirs (UGRs).
Singh pointed out that the previous government's negligence had resulted in a cost increase of Rs 399 crore for this project, which is anticipated to benefit residents across nine Assembly constituencies, including Patel Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran, Sadar Bazar, Model Town, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, and R.K. Puram.
