Development of Bhagat Singh's Birthplace into a Premier Tourist Attraction

Khatkar Kalan, Dec 4 (NationPress) The birthplace of the revolutionary Bhagat Singh, situated just outside Banga town in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Punjab, is being transformed into a renowned tourist destination of global standards.
This initiative is part of the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, through which the Government of India has sanctioned 40 projects across 23 states aimed at establishing them as iconic tourist centers of international standards.
The planned Heritage Street in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar aims to honor the Indian hero and the freedom movement. This street will seamlessly link the Bhagat Singh Museum to his ancestral home.
Khatkar Kalan, deeply tied to India’s struggle for freedom, will eternally be linked to Bhagat Singh as his family’s birthplace. The house in Khatkar Kalan, now a protected monument, was constructed by Bhagat Singh’s great-grandfather, Sardar Fateh Singh, in 1858.
This site was designated a monument under the ‘Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act’ (1964) in 1982.
The envisioned heritage street will connect the Bhagat Singh Museum to his ancestral home, offering immersive experiences, live performances, and historical reenactments.
This project will vividly illustrate Bhagat Singh's valor and the nation’s struggle for Independence, instilling a sense of patriotism and national pride.
Experiential elements will include live fire symbolizing the legendary flame of freedom, narratives of bravery, 3D sets with live performances, a depiction of a 1900s Punjabi village, informative infographics, seating areas, and signage.
Additionally, facade lighting on Bhagat Singh’s ancestral house, illuminated sculptures representing freedom, and the Indian flag will be installed. A musical fountain show is also planned to enhance the visitor experience.
A museum has already been established for public access near his ancestral home. To further honor the freedom fighter, a Heritage Street is proposed, stretching from the museum to the ancestral home, offering a rich experience of bravery, culture, and history. The street will provide diverse experiences for visitors, from immersive areas to live performances.
The 40 projects across 23 states, amounting to Rs 3,295.76 crore, aim to boost local economies and generate employment through sustainable tourism.
Measures such as decongesting popular sites, integrating cutting-edge technologies, promoting sustainability, and fostering public-private partnerships will be implemented to ensure a world-class experience for all who wish to explore India’s natural, cultural, and historical beauty, according to an official statement.
