Mumbai, April 30 (NationPress) The Maharashtra government has officially appointed IPS officer Deven Bharti as the new Police Commissioner of Mumbai. Bharti, who has served as the Special Police Commissioner since 2023, is set to succeed Vivek Phansalkar, who is retiring today.
Several senior police officials, including Sadanand Date, Sanjay Varma, and Archana Tyagi, were also considered for the prestigious position.
A 1994 batch IAS officer, Bharti has held several key roles within the Mumbai police force, notably as Joint Commissioner of Police for Law and Order and as Additional Commissioner of Police for the Crime Branch. He has led the Maharashtra State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and played a vital role in investigating significant cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the murder of journalist J. Dey.
He was pivotal in dismantling the terror organization Indian Mujahideen in Maharashtra.
