New Delhi, July 22 (NationPress) The Congress party stated on Tuesday that only the Central government and Jagdeep Dhankhar are privy to the true motives behind his resignation as the Vice President of India. They have urged the government to provide clarity on this matter.
Dhankhar, who held the position of the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, resigned on July 21, coinciding with the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
This unexpected resignation has not only startled many but also given the Opposition fresh ammunition, as they view this action as politically significant.
The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress National President, Mallikarjun Kharge, addressed the media, stating, "We are not involved in the reasons behind this. The government is aware. We refrain from commenting on it as it is their decision; whether they accept it or not is solely their prerogative."
The timing of his resignation, right at the start of the Monsoon Session, has spurred speculation.
Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi raised concerns regarding the absence of any statement from the Centre following this abrupt resignation.
In an interview with IANS, he remarked, "I wish the Vice President good health. However, the way this unfolded suggests that the Centre was caught off guard. What has altered between the Centre and the Vice President? Yesterday, Union Ministers were absent from the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, and today, there remains silence from the Prime Minister."
"What has changed in the dynamics between the Centre and the Vice President that has led to this lack of coordination? What lies ahead? There are no clear answers. This is precisely why we demand an explanation from the government," he added.
On July 16, 2022, the BJP presented Dhankhar as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for Vice President. In the Vice Presidential elections held on August 6, 2022, Dhankhar triumphed over opposition candidate Margaret Alva, securing 528 out of 710 valid votes, which amounted to 74.37 percent—the largest margin of victory since 1992.
As Vice President, Dhankhar also acted as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, presiding over numerous pivotal legislative sessions. His strict commitment to parliamentary procedures and his straightforward approach earned him both respect and contention from various party factions.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, recognized as an experienced politician and constitutional authority, was regarded by many as a firm yet equitable presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha.
