Mumbai, March 25 (NationPress) The Dharavi survey for the proposed redevelopment initiative has successfully exceeded the previous benchmark. The current survey has gone beyond the scope of the last assessment conducted in 2007-08, which aimed to map and catalogue Dharavi’s residential and commercial properties.

With over 63,000 tenements already accounted for -- and the numbers still rising -- the ongoing survey has far exceeded the earlier benchmark of around 60,000 ground-floor tenements. Under the guidelines of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), only ground-floor tenements are usually deemed eligible for free housing.

“Our survey has crossed a significant milestone, one that the government can reflect on with pride. This redevelopment scheme is not limited to ground-floor tenements but also encompasses upper-floor structures. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring housing for all. No one in Dharavi will be left behind,” stated Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) CEO, SVR Srinivas.

According to the latest survey data, lane reconnaissance has been completed for more than 95,000 tenements, with over 89,000 tenements assigned numbers, and door-to-door surveys finished for more than 63,000 tenements. Unlike the previous survey, the current one includes both ground-floor and upper-floor structures, existing SRA buildings, slum residents on RLDA Land, and all religious buildings.

“We are dealing with substantial figures here, and we have entered the final phase of the survey. The statistics clearly indicate that the residents of Dharavi are in favor of redevelopment and are actively engaging. However, we encourage everyone to participate promptly so that the subsequent phases of redevelopment can commence. Residents who have not yet participated must volunteer quickly. We will not revisit tenements whose residents have either declined to participate or have not provided their documents despite repeated requests,” Srinivas added.

The Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL), the special purpose vehicle (SPV) established to oversee the project, is preparing to build nearly 1.5 lakh tenements as most hutments have expanded vertically to G+2 levels, increasing the number of tenements requiring rehabilitation.

Commenting on the progress, an NMDPL spokesperson stated, “We are thrilled to be nearing the conclusion of the survey and urge any resident who hasn’t yet been included to step forward as soon as possible. We have witnessed an overwhelming response from the residents of Dharavi. Their positivity and aspiration for a dignified life have pushed this redevelopment project ahead. We honor their spirit and respect their dreams for a better life for themselves and future generations.”

All eligible residents of Dharavi will be rehabilitated within the area itself. Those deemed ineligible will be relocated to modern townships outside Dharavi, equipped with comprehensive amenities and modern infrastructure. These new townships will be situated within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and will include social and public infrastructure, such as Metro connectivity and other mobility solutions.
