Is Former Indian Footballer Dipendu Biswas Making a Comeback to Trinamool Ahead of Assembly Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) Dipendu Biswas, a former Indian football star and ex-MLA of Basirhat Dakshin, has rejoined the Trinamool Congress this Sunday.
Alongside him, notable figures such as Basirhat No. I Block Congress President Quader Sardar and former Vice Chairman of Basirhat Municipality Parthasarathy Basu also transitioned to the ruling party.
Biswas's return to Trinamool is particularly noteworthy as the Assembly elections approach, sparking speculation about a potential ticket for him in the forthcoming elections.
The former footballer has a long history with Trinamool, having received a ticket during the 2016 Assembly elections, where he won from the Basirhat Dakshin constituency. However, in the 2021 Assembly polls, the party chose not to nominate him.
This led to his discontent, prompting him to switch allegiances to the BJP just before the 2021 elections. Despite being appointed as a permanent member of the party's state committee, he resigned within a few months, sending his resignation to the then state BJP President Dilip Ghosh and the party's state office. Now, after a four-year hiatus, Biswas has made his way back to Trinamool.
On Sunday, he was formally welcomed back into the party by Trinamool's Basirhat leadership. Following his induction, Biswas acknowledged that his earlier decision to leave was erroneous.
"I have always fought hard to achieve my goals as a footballer. Hence, I realize that leaving the party was a mistake," he stated.
Elaborating on his return, he said, "I am rejoining the Trinamool Congress because I support Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the developmental initiatives in Basirhat."
When asked if he would run for office again in the Assembly elections, he remarked, "I am ready to undertake any responsibilities assigned to me by the party."
