Kolkata, Oct 15 (NationPress) A significant political controversy has emerged in West Bengal as a local BJP leader from Nadia district, who was once implicated in the murder of a Trinamool Congress legislator in February 2019, has switched allegiance to the ruling party in the state.
The contentious BJP figure, hailing from Hanskhali in Nadia district, is Nirmal Ghosh, one of the six individuals accused in the death of Satyajit Biswas, the Trinamool Congress representative for the Krishnaganj constituency, on the evening of February 9, 2019, mere months before the Lok Sabha elections that year.
Although Ghosh was arrested at that time, he was ultimately acquitted by the court. On Tuesday, he was welcomed into the Trinamool Congress by Jaiprakash Majumdar, the state vice-president of the party, along with Mukut Mani Adhikari, the Trinamool Congress legislator from the Ranaghat (Dakshin) Assembly constituency in the district.
Interestingly, both Majumdar and Adhikari were formerly affiliated with the BJP before switching to Trinamool Congress. Majumdar previously served as the state vice-president of the BJP in West Bengal, while Adhikari was a former BJP legislator.
Majumdar defended Ghosh’s transition to the Trinamool Congress, asserting that Ghosh’s earlier arrest for the murder of Satyajit Biswas stemmed from a conspiracy orchestrated by local BJP leaders in Nadia district.
In a related note, the widow of Biswas, Rupali Biswas, has refrained from public comment since news of Ghosh's party switch emerged. Notably, she was a candidate for the Trinamool Congress from the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency during the 2019 elections, yet was defeated by two-time BJP Lok Sabha member Jagannath Sarkar.
Despite the absence of official comments from Trinamool Congress, some leaders within the party in Nadia district have acknowledged that Ghosh's joining could lead to discontent among grassroots party members.
“No one is voicing concerns publicly. However, a significant number of our district party workers are dissatisfied with this turn of events,” remarked a Trinamool Congress legislator from the district, wishing to remain anonymous.
In response, Jagannath Sarkar, the BJP Lok Sabha member from the same Ranaghat constituency, indicated that this incident highlights the political bankruptcy of Trinamool Congress. “Party workers in Nadia should now recognize how their leadership truly regards them,” Sarkar stated.
