Guwahati/Imphal, Sep 30 (NationPress) Drugs valued at Rs 11 crore were confiscated by security forces, leading to the arrest of four individuals in Assam and Manipur, officials reported on Tuesday.
According to the Superintendent of Police for the Cachar district, Numal Mahatta, a special operation was initiated by Assam police on Monday night following reliable intelligence concerning the illegal transport of narcotics along the Silchar-Aizawl By-Pass road under the Silchar Police station's jurisdiction.
Police personnel successfully stopped a truck originating from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, and discovered 30,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets during a vehicle search.
The confiscated drugs, valued at approximately Rs 9 crores, were found in three black polythene-wrapped packets and hidden in specially designed secret compartments within the truck. The vehicle used for this illicit drug transportation has also been seized.
The seizure of the narcotics was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, and examination with a drug detection kit confirmed the presence of methamphetamine.
Initial investigations revealed that the illegal substances were transported from Aizawl.
Further inquiries into the case are currently underway, Mahatta stated.
In another update, a police official noted that these drugs were smuggled from Myanmar and brought to Assam via Mizoram.
The Chin state of Myanmar is known for being a hub for the trafficking of various drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
Various drugs, especially methamphetamine tablets, heroin, arms, ammunition, explosives, and different types of contraband are frequently illegally traded through these six districts, which share a 210 km unfenced border with Myanmar.
In a separate incident, security forces in Manipur apprehended two drug traffickers from Ngari Raidulomai Village in the Senapati district at Kwakta Terakhongshangbi in Bishnupur district. The suspects were identified as T.S. Valleyrose (40) and T.T. Doveine Worthingla (37).
Authorities recovered 11 soap cases containing heroin weighing approximately 161 grams, valued at Rs 1.83 crore, along with two mobile phones and two Aadhaar cards from their possession.
In another instance, security forces arrested two passengers at Imphal Airport for carrying contraband ganja (cannabis) weighing around 21.420 kgs in their luggage. The estimated value of the ganja exceeds Rs 20 lakh. The individuals were identified as Laishram Vikash Singh (20) and Ngangbam Nelson Meitei (19), both hailing from the Imphal West district.
