Aizawl, June 21 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles alongside other law enforcement bodies have confiscated drugs worth Rs 11.53 crore and detained five drug traffickers, including two women, in Mizoram, as reported by an official on Saturday.
A spokesperson from the Defence sector stated that based on specific intelligence regarding narcotics trafficking from Vaseikai to Lunglei, an Area Domination Party (ADP) was initiated in the Pukpui region of Lunglei district.
The ADP successfully stopped a vehicle suspected of carrying drugs. Upon conducting a detailed search of the individuals inside, the team discovered 36,400 Methamphetamine tablets weighing 3.47 kg, estimated to be worth Rs 10.43 crore.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sapna Chakma and Punhosur Chakma.
The confiscated items and detained drug traffickers have been transferred to the Excise and Narcotics Department of Lunglei for further investigation and legal action.
In two additional operations, Assam Rifles personnel also seized foreign-origin cigarettes valued at Rs 81 lakh and apprehended one individual, along with two women, with 39.2 grams of heroin estimated at Rs 29.4 lakh from Champhai district, which borders Myanmar.
The capture of various drugs, including highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, has become a frequent occurrence in Mizoram.
Drugs such as Methamphetamine tablets and heroin are regularly smuggled from Myanmar and illegally transported to various regions of India and Bangladesh through the northeastern states.
Myanmar, which has a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—serves as a major transit hub for drugs and other contraband entering India.
However, the continuous vigilance enforced by security forces and law enforcement agencies often results in the interception of drugs and the apprehension of smugglers and those involved in the illicit transport of narcotics.
Myanmar's Chin state is notorious for being a center for the smuggling of various drugs, exotic wildlife, and other illicit goods.
