A Delhi University Assistant Professor was found murdered inside her flat at Satyam Apartment in Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi, on 4 June 2025, police confirmed on Friday. The victim, Devosmita Paul, who taught at Shivaji College, University of Delhi, had been living alone in the apartment for four to five years. Delhi Police have registered a case and formed multiple teams to trace and apprehend the accused.

How the Body Was Discovered

A PCR call was received at New Ashok Nagar Police Station at around 2:35 pm on 4 June from a woman who reported that her sister had been killed and her body was lying inside the flat. The caller was later identified as Devarati Paul, the deceased's sister.

According to police, Devarati told officers that the flat had been locked from the outside since the morning and that Devosmita was not responding to repeated phone calls. Growing alarmed, she broke open the lock and discovered her sister's body inside the apartment.

Last Known Contact and Circumstances

Investigators have established that Devosmita Paul had last spoken to her mother over the phone before the incident. When her sister subsequently tried to reach her, the phone was found switched off. After several unsuccessful attempts, Devarati visited the flat — and made the grim discovery.

Police noted that the professor primarily relied on online delivery services for her daily essentials, living independently in the flat for the past four to five years. Investigators are now collecting details of delivery personnel and other possible visitors as part of the probe.

Forensic Examination and Evidence Collection

A Crime Team was immediately dispatched to the scene and carried out a detailed inspection. The area was photographed and videographed, and forensic samples along with other relevant exhibits were collected. The body has since been shifted to LBS Hospital for preservation and post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at New Ashok Nagar Police Station.

Investigation: CCTV Footage, Visitor Tracing

Delhi Police are scanning CCTV footage from the apartment complex and surrounding areas to identify who may have visited the flat in the two to three days preceding the incident. Multiple police teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the accused, and the investigation is ongoing.

This case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of individuals living alone in urban residential complexes, where extended periods of no contact can delay the discovery of a crime. Authorities have not yet publicly named any suspect or established a motive.
