Chennai, Jan 13 (NationPress) DMK General Secretary and Tamil Nadu Minister for Water Resources Development, S. Duraimurugan, on Monday criticized Governor R.N. Ravi, asserting that it is he who is “arrogant”.

Duraimurugan, the second-most senior leader in Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s cabinet, made this declaration during the launch of a state government exhibition in Vellore.

This statement comes in light of the ongoing friction between the Governor and the Tamil Nadu administration, which intensified after Ravi exited the Assembly session on January 6.

The discord ignited when the Governor declined to present his prepared address in the Assembly, attributing his decision to a protest regarding the performance of the National Anthem at the session's conclusion.

While addressing the gathering, Duraimurugan defended the state government, stating: “For an extended period, it has been customary to sing ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ at the commencement of the Assembly session and the National Anthem at its conclusion. The Governor took issue with this and accused our Chief Minister of being arrogant. However, in truth, it is the Governor who is exhibiting arrogance.”

The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan issued a statement on January 6, indicating that Governor Ravi departed the Assembly “in deep anguish” due to the National Anthem not being played.

Chief Minister Stalin vehemently condemned the Governor’s choice not to deliver his prepared address, labeling it “childish”.

Stalin, while wrapping up the discussion on the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address on January 11, highlighted that according to Article 176 of the Constitution, the Governor is mandated to present his address to the Assembly at the beginning of the session.

“However, he appears to be intent on breaching the regulations in a calculated manner,” he remarked.

In response, Ravi issued a statement on January 12, criticizing Stalin. In a post on X, the Raj Bhavan commented: “Stalin claims that insisting on proper respect for the National Anthem and fulfilling the fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution is ‘absurd’ and ‘childish.’ Thanks for revealing the true intentions of the coalition of interests and ideologies he leads, which does not accept or respect Bharat as a nation and her Constitution.”

“Such arrogance is inappropriate. Please remember that Bharat is the supreme Mother, and the Constitution is the supreme faith for her children. They will not appreciate or tolerate such blatant insults.”

During his rebuttal in the Assembly, Stalin accused Ravi’s actions of stemming from his inability to “digest” Tamil Nadu’s progress.

“The Tamil Nadu Assembly has been witnessing peculiar events ever since Ravi took office as Governor. In 2022, he delivered his address without modifying the speech; however, in subsequent years, he has evaded the customary address, citing ludicrous reasons.”

“I may be an ordinary individual, but this Legislative Assembly embodies the aspirations of crores of people. I believe the Governor cannot tolerate the progress of the state.”
