Agartala, Sep 27 (NationPress) As the five-day-long Durga Puja celebrations kick off on Sunday, extensive security measures have been implemented along Tripura's 856-km border with Bangladesh, officials reported on Saturday.

Tripura's Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag stated that several meetings have taken place with the Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies to enhance vigilance along the India–Bangladesh border.

“The BSF has committed to bolstering security and oversight to avert any untoward incidents in border villages and to deter the cross-border movement of hostile elements. Troops will increase their patrols both day and night,” DGP Anurag informed IANS.

Tripura is encircled on three sides by Bangladesh, rendering it particularly vulnerable to issues such as cross-border migration and crime. Most of the border has been fenced to combat smuggling, trans-border crimes, and illegal movements by infiltrators.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has engaged in discussions with senior security officials from various agencies, including the BSF, urging them to coordinate closely on border-related matters.

Since the onset of violence in Bangladesh in June-July of the previous year, especially post the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, the para-military troops have increased their vigilance along the International Border.

Durga Puja pandals have been inaugurated across Tripura by the Chief Minister and other party leaders.

This year, approximately 3,000 community pujas are being organized, an increase from 2,750 last year, as stated by the state police chief Anurag.

In the district of West Tripura alone, 775 community pujas are scheduled. Additionally, many Durga Pujas are taking place in the homes of affluent families.

With an additional deployment of 8,000 police and security personnel, measures have been intensified to ensure a peaceful celebration of Durga Puja.

Over 400 women police officers and numerous plainclothes security agents will assist in maintaining the safety and serenity of the festivities.

DGP Anurag stated that numerous CCTV cameras and watchtowers have been installed in key, sensitive locations and crowded areas to manage the influx of visitors during the celebrations.

Increased vigilance has also been established along the India-Bangladesh borders with Assam and Tripura, with state authorities instructing the BSF to maintain strict oversight to thwart any infiltration and cross-border movement of hostile elements.

Point of View

The protection of citizens and the prevention of cross-border issues remain paramount. As the state prepares for the celebrations, the cooperative efforts of various security agencies will be critical in ensuring a safe environment for all.
