Will ECI Unveil the List of Bengal Housing Complexes for Polling Booths This Month?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 11 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the list of private housing complexes in West Bengal this month, where temporary polling booths will be established for the significant Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
According to sources within the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, a total of 78 housing complexes with multiple towers have been earmarked for the installation of temporary polling booths. The official list is expected to be made public on February 25.
The West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress have expressed their objections to the establishment of polling booths at these housing complexes from the outset. Their primary concern is that doing so would necessitate the temporary accommodation of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel within these complexes, potentially disrupting residents' peace.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also voiced her disapproval of the Commission’s suggestion to set up polling booths within the housing complexes.
Nevertheless, the ECI defends its decision, arguing that the establishment of polling booths in these complexes would facilitate easier access for residents, particularly senior citizen voters, who would otherwise have to travel longer distances to reach their designated polling stations.
On Tuesday, the ECI also released an updated timeline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. This revised schedule indicates that hearings concerning claims and objections to the draft voters’ list will conclude by February 21, with the final voters’ list being published on February 28.
On March 1, a full ECI delegation will visit West Bengal for two days to review the situation following the SIR process. Shortly after, the Commission is anticipated to announce the polling dates for the pivotal Assembly elections slated for later this year.
