Jalandhar, March 21 (NationPress) The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) from the Jalandhar Zonal Office has temporarily frozen both movable and immovable assets totaling Rs 42 lakh on Friday as part of an investigation into a financial fraud case involving Sanjeev Kumar, a former Sub-Postmaster at the Dakhni Gate Nakodar Sub-Office in Jalandhar, Punjab, along with other suspects, according to an official statement.
This action was executed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, as detailed in the statement.
The ED's inquiry was prompted by a First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Sanjeev Kumar and several others. The accused are suspected of defrauding the government by misappropriating public funds through fraudulent activities related to post office savings schemes.
During his term, Sanjeev Kumar is alleged to have established fictitious savings accounts and manipulated real accounts, which enabled him to unlawfully withdraw government funds amounting to Rs 8.48 crore, as stated.
The ED's investigation uncovered that the fraudulently obtained money was laundered through a sophisticated network of numerous bank accounts controlled by Kumar and his associates.
Further findings from the ED investigation reveal that the proceeds of crime (POC) were transferred through a series of intricate transactions, aimed at integrating the illicit funds into the financial system. A substantial portion of the POC was reportedly withdrawn in cash and laundered via various strategies for personal benefit by Kumar and his accomplices.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities diligently working to uncover the full scale of the financial fraud and its associated network. The seizure of assets worth Rs 42 lakh is part of the efforts to recover the misappropriated funds and dismantle the fraud operation.
Officials from the ED have indicated that they are closely monitoring developments and will continue their efforts in cooperation with other law enforcement bodies. Additional updates are anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
