Kalaburagi (Karnataka), June 11 (NationPress) Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge asserted on Wednesday that the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids were designed to fragment the party's unity in the state.

Kharge expressed his concerns regarding the ED investigations targeting four Congress leaders, including one MP and three MLAs, in relation to the Maharshi Valmiki Tribal Welfare Board scam.

While addressing the media in Kalaburagi, Kharge stated, “The ED officials are well aware of the motives behind the raids on our leaders. Such actions are not unprecedented. During elections, money from all parties is confiscated, yet the whereabouts of that seized money remain a mystery.”

He further emphasized that Congress MLAs are being unfairly singled out, suggesting that the ED has harbored animosity towards the party since its inception. Kharge posited that the intention behind these ED operations might be to divide the Congress party, although he firmly believes that such a strategy will fail.

“The current raids are based on allegations of misusing government funds for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which is untenable,” he remarked.

In response to the situation, Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, who was in Delhi, stated he was informed about the ED actions through the media. “In my opinion, there’s no link between our Congress leaders and the alleged scam. Reports indicate that one of the personal secretaries passed a note from a leader, but our ministers and legislators have no involvement,” he clarified.

“They did not distribute money to voters, nor was any cash utilized during the elections. Officials have informed me that around 90 percent of the misappropriated funds have been recovered from those responsible. There is no connection between our legislators, MP, and this scam,” he reaffirmed.

Addressing the ED raids, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked in Chikkaballapura, “Let action be taken against those guilty. I will not shield the culpable. An investigation is underway, and we should allow the truth to emerge,” he stated.

Basavaraj Rayareddy, the Economic Advisor to CM Siddaramaiah, commented in Delhi, saying, “It is inappropriate to target only Congress leaders. The investigation is being conducted by the state government. These raids aim to instill fear among Congress representatives, and the BJP is engaging in a politics of hatred,” he noted.

Congress MLC B.K. Hariprasad criticized the BJP for using the ED as a weapon against political adversaries.

The ED was undertaking raids at various locations associated with four Congress leaders in connection with the Maharshi Valmiki Tribal Welfare Board scam in Ballary district and Bengaluru.

A team of 60 ED officers was conducting simultaneous raids across eight locations, including five in Ballary and three in Bengaluru city, since early morning, as per sources.

According to ED reports, raids are currently being executed at the residences and offices of Congress Ballary MP E. Tukaram and Congress MLAs Na. Ra. Bharath Reddy, J.N. Ganesh (also known as Kampli Ganesh), and N. T. Srinivas.

Additionally, raids are taking place at the Bengaluru office of former Minister and Congress MLA Nagendra.

The residence of Govardhan, the personal assistant to Ballary Congress MLA and former Minister B. Nagendra, is also under investigation.
