Kolkata, November 17 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is taking significant legal steps to document the statements of the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, as part of their investigation into a multi-crore financial irregularity case. Ghosh is currently in judicial custody concerning this matter.

ED officials have made a formal request to a special court in Kolkata to obtain Ghosh's statements while he is at the correctional facility, invoking Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

This provision gives the ED the authority to summon individuals and mandate the presentation of documents during investigations into money laundering activities. These powers encompass administering oaths, collecting evidence through affidavits, and issuing commissions, rendering proceedings under this section judicial and punishable for non-compliance.

The ED plans to present information regarding Ghosh’s recorded statement to the court on December 14.

It is noteworthy that on August 9 of the previous year, a post-graduate trainee's body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that reverberated across the nation, triggering extensive protests from doctors, the public, and even women in households.

The sole convict, Sanjoy Roy, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment, yet a year later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not concluded its inquiry into the broader conspiracy behind the crime.

The financial corruption allegations surfaced following the rape-murder incident, with claims that funds earmarked for various hospital needs were embezzled. Ghosh was subsequently arrested.

The CBI initiated a case and began looking into the financial corruption, conducting searches at Ghosh's residence and collecting numerous documents.

The state government had initially set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the corruption allegations. In the meantime, Ghosh's former colleague, Akhtar Ali, approached the Calcutta High Court to demand an ED investigation against Ghosh. Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, prompted the CBI to file the initial case regarding the financial misconduct. The ED also filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) based on that FIR. It is important to note that not only Ghosh is under scrutiny, but several others are also being investigated by the ED.

Point of View

It is critical to approach the investigation into financial misconduct at R.G. Kar Medical College with impartiality. The unfolding events highlight the importance of accountability in public institutions, especially in the wake of tragedies that reveal systemic issues. The efforts of the ED and CBI are vital to restoring public trust and ensuring justice.
