Imphal, June 28 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, announced on Saturday that central leaders from the BJP are currently evaluating the situation in the state. He emphasized that efforts are being made to reestablish a popular government, as the state has been under President's rule for over four months.
Singh expressed his optimism, stating, "I am confident that we will see a new government formed in Manipur soon," while speaking with the media during a book release event at the BJP state headquarters.
According to Singh, the BJP, as a national party, is thoroughly assessing the ground realities before establishing the new government promptly.
He further noted, "The BJP and its allied parties are all committed to restoring a popular government in Manipur to effectively manage the current situation in the state." Singh had resigned from his position as Chief Minister on February 9, just four days prior to the imposition of President’s Rule on February 13.
The former Chief Minister mentioned that numerous leaders and organizations have reached out to the Central government and all relevant parties to find a friendly resolution and bring back peace and normalcy in the state.
He highlighted that the central government is diligently working to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, mentioning that the state has not experienced any communal violence for approximately seven to eight months, suggesting a gradual return to stability.
Singh reiterated the significant threat posed by illegal migrants and unlawful drug activities, which have impacted the entire northeastern region, including Manipur. He stated, "Gradually, everyone has come to recognize this critical issue."
The book titled “The Emergency Diaries”, released at the BJP office in Imphal, narrates Prime Minister Narendra Modi's experiences during the 1975 Emergency as a young RSS worker.
During the event, Singh reflected on a time when democratic rights were suspended in India, characterizing the Emergency as a dark chapter in the nation’s political history.
BJP Manipur state President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi also mentioned that efforts are ongoing to restore a democratically elected government in the state.
She indicated that discussions are taking place between the BJP’s central leadership and the state unit. Recalling the Emergency of 1975, she reminded everyone of the risks posed by authoritarian rule and noted that the BJP was officially established in 1980.
Separately, former Chief Minister Singh and BJP Rajya Sabha Member from Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi earlier this month, requesting his assistance in restoring normalcy in the state.
Additionally, BJP’s North East In-charge Sambit Patra visited the Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts last month, meeting Kuki BJP MLAs Vungzagin Valte and Nemcha Kipgen, along with various Kuki-Zo and civil society organizations, including the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU).
Patra also conferred with Singh and other leaders in Imphal. The Manipur Assembly, comprising 60 members, has been under suspended animation since President's Rule was enacted on February 13, with a tenure lasting until 2027.
