Bengaluru, May 27 (NationPress) - With Karnataka witnessing an uptick in COVID-19 cases, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized on Tuesday the importance of mask-wearing, particularly for the elderly and individuals with co-morbidities, as a vital precautionary step.
His remarks came during a media interaction following his homage to the statue and portrait of the late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, commemorating his death anniversary near the east gate of Vidhana Soudha.
During the press briefing, the Chief Minister indicated that precautionary strategies were deliberated in a meeting held on Monday.
"We need to be ready for all possibilities. It’s crucial that we ensure ventilators, oxygen supplies, and hospital wards remain fully operational," he stated.
He noted that the COVID cases have risen from 65 to 80, although he reassured that the situation is not currently critical.
"Children exhibiting symptoms like cold, cough, or fever should remain at home. It is essential for the elderly and those with underlying health issues to wear masks. We must also stock up on vaccines as a precaution," he advised.
CM Siddaramaiah clarified that mask mandates are not applicable to the entire population, but specific guidelines have been issued for vulnerable groups.
He also mentioned that the central government has yet to provide directives for conducting airport screenings, though necessary precautions will be implemented.
Reflecting on Jawaharlal Nehru, Siddaramaiah remarked that he was a cornerstone of modern India.
"Nehru earnestly worked towards alleviating poverty. His policies fostered a mixed economy and laid the groundwork for the 'Green Revolution'. His dedication to cooperative movements and decentralization was evident throughout his 17 years as Prime Minister, during which he initiated the establishment of numerous dams, public sector industries, and educational institutions," the CM observed.
"Today’s economic resilience and food self-sufficiency can be traced back to the foundations he established. Every Indian should honor his legacy. Without Nehru’s pioneering efforts, modern India would be unimaginable. If India stands as the fifth-largest economy globally today, it is due to Nehru’s visionary leadership," he concluded.
