These institutes train over 2.17 lakh candidates each year, according to the government data released on Monday.
The state administration is committed to ensuring inclusive access to technical education.
Individuals from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes (ST), women, and persons with disabilities are completely exempt from tuition fees, while other students pay a nominal fee of Rs 100 per month. Eligible participants also receive a monthly stipend of Rs 500, free raw materials for hands-on training, free state transport bus passes, accident insurance coverage of up to Rs 4 lakh, and hostel accommodations.
Currently, 132 courses are available, which include 79 national-level and 53 state-level programs, spanning engineering and non-engineering fields.
The curriculum is frequently updated to align with changing industry needs, with emerging fields such as Internet of Things, drone piloting, and solar technology gaining prominence.
To bolster women's education, the 'Vidyasadhana Sahay Yojana' offers bicycles to trainees from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
During summer breaks, over one lakh students from Grade 8 and above receive short-term skill training through summer workshops at ITIs.
Furthermore, under the Central government's 'Craftsmen Training Scheme', ITIs operate under dual frameworks of the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and the Gujarat Council for Vocational Training (GCVT).
These programs are executed via government ITIs, GIA centers, self-financed institutes, and government technical high schools, aiming to elevate productivity and quality in both the industrial and service sectors through a skilled workforce.
Gujarat significantly contributes to India’s skilled workforce pool, with more than eight percent of the national ITI-trained student population graduating from the state annually.
According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Gujarat consistently ranks among the top five states for successful completion of NCVT certifications.
The state has established over 40 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) ITIs, collaborating with industry leaders like Tata, Larsen & Toubro, and Suzuki on curriculum design, faculty training, and campus job placements.
Additionally, Gujarat has witnessed a substantial increase in apprenticeship contracts, surpassing 1.2 lakh active apprenticeships in 2024 under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, significantly above the national average.
