Enhanced Security Measures in Punjab Prisons: Minister

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (NationPress) Punjab Jails Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar stated on Friday that the Prisons Department has undertaken crucial initiatives to bolster security protocols and advance prisoner rehabilitation.
"The government is constructing a Rs100 crore high-security prison near Ludhiana, covering over 50 acres. Once operational, this facility is set to house 300 high-risk inmates," an official statement quoting Bhullar revealed.
He mentioned that the department is focusing on integrating technology, with AI-based CCTV surveillance being deployed in eight central jails to identify contraband throws, wall scaling, and unauthorized mobile device usage.
This advanced system will be expanded to an additional six jails, he added. Likewise, V-Kavach jammers are being installed in twelve sensitive jails, building on the successful implementation at Central Jail Bathinda, which has also received an extra CRPF company for improved security.
To modernize communication while curbing illegal mobile usage, the Jails Minister stated that over 750 inmate calling systems are being set up.
"The department is working on outfitting all 13 sensitive jails with X-ray baggage scanners and expanding CCTV coverage in high-security areas where high-risk prisoners are held," he said.
The newly formed Research, Analysis and Intelligence Wing, operational since October 2023, has enhanced internal security through intelligence-driven operations and behavioral assessments of inmates.
Regarding rehabilitation, Bhullar mentioned that 2,200 inmates are currently engaged in educational programs under the Sikhya Daat Project, while 513 prisoners are participating in various skill development initiatives, including electrical work, plumbing, and tailoring.
He also noted the department's efforts in expanding commercial ventures by establishing two new petrol pumps at Nabha and Fazilka, increasing the total to eight operational units.
To address staffing requirements, the Cabinet minister indicated that 738 warders and 25 matrons have recently joined, with ongoing recruitment for an additional 179 guarding staff positions.
The government has greenlit the revival of 1,220 posts across different cadres, with recruitment to commence shortly, he added.
For psychological support, three counsellors have been appointed under the Punjab Prisons Development Board to aid both inmates and staff.
