New Delhi, June 19 (NationPress) On Thursday, the inaugural flight transporting 110 Indian citizens, including 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir, successfully landed in New Delhi after being evacuated from Iran amidst the intensifying military conflict in the Middle East.
These Indian nationals were brought back on IndiGo flight 6E 9487.
Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, was present to welcome the evacuated students at Indira Gandhi International Airport, as reported by IANS.
India initiated Operation Sindhu, a mission dedicated to ensuring the safety and evacuation of Indian nationals from Iran.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Wednesday evening that Indian students residing in Tehran were successfully evacuated from the city through the efforts of the Indian Embassy.
In an official statement, the Ministry noted, "Indian students in Tehran have been relocated for safety reasons through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy."
The students departed from Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, Armenia, aboard a special flight at 14:55 IST on June 18, with their expected arrival in New Delhi during the early hours of June 19.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced via Twitter, "Operation Sindhu begins. India launched this operation to evacuate its nationals from Iran. We successfully evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in both Iran and Armenia on June 17.
This effort is part of the broader measures taken by the Indian government in recent days to ensure the safety of Indian nationals stranded in Iran amid the worsening situation due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The Indian government expressed gratitude to the governments of Iran and Armenia for their cooperation in facilitating the evacuation process.
"India prioritizes the safety and security of its nationals abroad. As part of the ongoing operation, the Indian Embassy in Iran has been aiding numerous Indian nationals in relocating from areas experiencing heightened hostilities to relatively safer locations within the country, and subsequently evacuating them through available and feasible options," stated the MEA.
The MEA urged Indian nationals in Iran to maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran through its emergency helpline and the 24x7 Control Room established by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
