Operation Toofan: Kerala minister calls on every family to join anti-drug fight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Thursday, 3 September declared that combating drug abuse is a shared societal responsibility, urging every individual and family to become an active participant in the state's ongoing anti-narcotics drive. He was speaking at the Idukki district-level 'Toofan Jagaran' programme, inaugurated as part of Operation Toofan – The Narco Hunt.
Key Developments in Operation Toofan
Since its launch, the operation has yielded significant results. According to the minister, 10,748 people have been arrested, more than 9,000 cases registered, and drugs worth nearly ₹170 crore seized. Among the headline seizures are 13 kg of MDMA from Coimbatore and hybrid cannabis worth ₹18 crore from Kochi.
What the Minister Said
'Drug prevention should begin with the attention of the mother, the care of the father, and the intervention of teachers and friends,' Chennithala said. He stressed that drug abuse must not be treated purely as a law-enforcement problem but as a family and community issue. He also warned that those involved in drug trafficking would not receive political protection, stating, 'While registering cases, the police will not look at anyone's face.'
Financial Networks Under the Scanner
The investigation is being extended beyond seizures to the financial infrastructure sustaining drug networks. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is currently conducting searches across four districts in Kerala, Chennithala said. Authorities are probing the source of funds, those financing drug transactions, and the broader financial web — including links to gold smuggling networks.
Evolving Tactics and Community Cooperation
Chennithala noted that synthetic drugs are increasingly reaching children, prompting the Kerala Police to adapt investigation methods in response to shifting trafficking patterns. The dog squad has received specialised training for drug detection. At the programme, Idukki MLA Roy K. Paulose presided, and Idukki Diocese Bishop Mar John Nellikunnel pledged the diocese's full cooperation with Operation Toofan. An anti-drug pledge was also administered to attendees.
What Comes Next
With the ED probe active and financial network investigations expanding, Operation Toofan appears to be shifting from street-level enforcement to targeting the economic backbone of Kerala's drug trade. The outcome of those financial investigations will likely determine how deep the crackdown can reach.
