Kunju Muhammed, a former two-time CPI-M affiliated independent legislator and noted film director, following accusations of inappropriate conduct towards a female jury member during the International Film Festival of Kerala-2025 (IFFK) screening.
The First Information Report (FIR) filed on Monday indicates that Muhammed, who held the position of jury chairman, allegedly committed the offense in a hotel room last month.
In response to the allegations, Muhammed refuted any claims of misconduct, suggesting it may be a case of misunderstanding.
"I am someone with several health issues. I am willing to apologize," stated Muhammed.
The alleged victim was part of the jury responsible for selecting films for the forthcoming festival, which is set to commence later this week.
The police took action based on a complaint initially directed to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan by the victim.
This complaint was subsequently forwarded to the local police station, where the victim's statement was recorded.
Following this, police personnel visited the hotel where the incident allegedly transpired and reviewed CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
At the age of seventy-seven, Muhammed is a veteran legislator, having won as an independent candidate with CPI(M) support.
He first entered the legislative assembly by winning a by-election in 1994 from the Guruvayoor constituency and successfully secured his seat again in the 1996 assembly elections.
Muhammed is also known as the founder-director of the CPI(M)-backed Kairali TV channel.
After graduating, he spent a decade abroad as a senior executive for a French multinational.
