Key Takeaways
Ghaziabad, March 23 (NationPress) A Special CBI Court in Ghaziabad has handed down a sentence of four years in prison to a former railway official from Agra for soliciting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a contractor.
The court found Rafi Ahmad, who was the Chief Yard Master at Agra Cantt Railway Station, guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act and also levied a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
The case was initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 4, 2015, following a complaint against the accused.
It was reported that Rafi Ahmad demanded illegal payment of Rs 30,000 from the contractor instead of lessening the penalty he had imposed for inadequate performance in loading/unloading Guards Line Boxes onto trains.
The CBI set up a sting operation and apprehended the accused as he accepted Rs 5,000, the first part of the demanded bribe, from the complainant.
Following their investigation, the CBI submitted a chargesheet on November 24, 2015, against Rafi Ahmad.
In an unrelated case earlier this month, a Special CBI Court in Dehradun sentenced eight officials to two years of rigorous imprisonment along with a total fine of Rs 2.85 lakh in a Rs 55 lakh fraud case involving the Public Works Department (PWD) from 2003.
The convicted officials included Deepak Kumar Verma (LDC), Madan Pal (Mate), Mani Ram (Beldar), Surendra Kumar Kaushik (Driver), Kasim (retired Beldar) from PWD Haridwar, Sukhpal Singh (UDC), Chatar Singh (Roller Driver) from PWD Roorkee, and Palu Das (Assistant Treasury Officer, Treasury Haridwar), all sentenced to two years each along with a cumulative fine.
The original case was lodged by the CBI on August 9, 2003, following orders from the Uttarakhand High Court on May 7, 2003, which directed the investigation to be transferred to the central agency.
