Mumbai/Nagpur, Feb 14 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday vehemently condemned state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal for making a comparison between the esteemed Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.
During a press conference, Chief Minister Fadnavis voiced strong disapproval, labeling the comparison as “disrespectful” and “unacceptable”. He elaborated that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a cherished icon in Maharashtra and throughout India, recognized for his valor, commitment to justice, and for founding the Maratha Empire.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is our hero and our source of motivation. To equate him with Tipu Sultan is an affront to the people of Maharashtra and the nation at large. Such statements only foster division and wound the sentiments of those who revere Shivaji Maharaj,” Chief Minister Fadnavis stated.
He called for an apology from Sapkal and stressed that Shivaji Maharaj’s significant contributions to India's history are incomparable and should not be exploited for political gain or contentious comparisons.
The ruling BJP-Shiv Sena coalition also denounced Sapkal’s comments, with various leaders demanding an apology and rebuking the comparison.
In response to the backlash, Sapkal remarked: “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s courage is unmatched. Shivray is our pride, and Tipu Sultan was also courageous and a champion of self-governance. He resisted the British, drawing inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. While these great leaders battled foreign adversaries, individuals aligned with the Sangh and BJP, including Devendra Fadnavis, were engaged in serving the British.”
He added: “Thus, Devendra Fadnavis should refrain from attempting to educate us on history. The people of Maharashtra remember the disparaging remarks made by Bhagat Singh Koshyari, along with BJP and RSS leaders, which they perceive as insulting to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe also criticized the Chief Minister’s statements, asserting: “We strongly denounce Devendra Fadnavis's efforts to incite controversy regarding the Congress state president’s remarks on Tipu Sultan. Meanwhile, the BJP government and Chief Minister remain silent on pressing issues such as unemployment, inflation, farmer suicides, and soaring electricity rates in the state.”
