Mumbai, March 17 (NationPress) Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal on Monday maintained his stance on his contentious statement comparing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, affirming that he would not retract his comments.
The remarks have sparked a political uproar, branding Fadnavis as "equally cruel as Aurangzeb," reigniting discussions around the Mughal emperor's role in current political dialogues.
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance promptly denounced Sapkal's remarks, accusing him of showing disrespect to Maharashtra. BJP leaders have criticized the Congress for exploiting Aurangzeb’s legacy for political gain, asserting that such statements harm the state's honor.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Sapkal justified his comments, arguing that they mirror the grim realities faced by the people of Maharashtra under Fadnavis’ administration.
He expressed, "This is a calculated attempt to distract from the genuine issues plaguing Maharashtra. My statement holds true, and I will not apologize. Today, we observe farmers and teachers taking their own lives, ordinary citizens perishing, and a rise in atrocities against women. The governance under Fadnavis is as brutal as the rulers of history. My remarks reflect a painful truth, not a mistake."
Sapkal also addressed the escalating discourse regarding the removal of Aurangzeb's grave, which has emerged as a contentious political issue in the state.
He contended that the Maharashtra government’s preoccupation with the grave issue is merely a distraction from more urgent matters like the escalating farmer crisis, crime, unemployment, and overarching governance challenges.
"The Maharashtra government is neglecting the farmer crisis, even as unemployment reaches alarming levels," Sapkal stated.
"Instead, they are manufacturing distractions like the controversy over Aurangzeb’s grave. Will exhuming a grave generate employment or resolve the issues faced by millions of unemployed individuals? This is simply a tactic to divert attention from the government’s failure to deliver on its responsibilities," he added.
Sapkal also criticized the conduct of those in power, accusing them of hypocrisy.
"These individuals pledged to uphold the Constitution when they took office. If they are now making unconstitutional statements, they are simply deceivers. This is their government, and they must be accountable for their actions. However, the historical context surrounding Shivaji Maharaj and his association with this grave is significant. The Marathas, under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, have a legacy bound to this land, and erasing that history would be an injustice," he concluded.
He emphasized the necessity of preserving historical narratives, particularly those linked to figures like Shivaji Maharaj.
"The history of Shivaji Maharaj should be honored. In the future, when people discuss him, they will also refer to his connection with this land. History should be revered, not obliterated," Sapkal finished.
